Game of Thrones Season 9 (2027) – Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke | The Snow sequel is canceled!

HBO ended the flagship Game of Thrones series in 2019 after eight seasons, and the network has never announced plans for a direct continuation of that storyline. The concept of a ninth season with Kit Harington and Emilia Clarke returning as Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen exists only in fan concept trailers and online speculation, not in any verified studio development slate.

What did exist was Snow, a proposed sequel series centered exclusively on Jon Snow that Kit Harington himself pitched to HBO in 2022. George R.R. Martin confirmed the project was real, with Harington assembling a team of writers and multiple draft scripts produced. Emilia Clarke acknowledged the discussions in a 2022 BBC interview, stating Harington had told her about it and that it was happening. However, by April 2024, Harington revealed the project was off the table because the team could not find the right story to tell. HBO chief Casey Bloys later confirmed the cancellation but left the door slightly open, saying maybe they will try again at a later date. Harington has since stated he has no intention of ever playing Jon Snow again, and the idea has been completely abandoned.

A second attempt at a sequel to the original series is reportedly in early development with Quoc Dang Tran attached as a writer, though no details about cast, plot, or timeline have been revealed. HBO’s current focus remains on prequels including House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, both of which have been officially greenlit and are in active production. The idea of Arya Stark heading west of Westeros was teased in the original series finale but has never been developed into a confirmed project.

In this video, you will get a complete breakdown of why Game of Thrones Season 9 does not exist and never will, from the definitive end of the original series to the rise and fall of the Snow sequel pitch and what HBO is actually developing within the world of Westeros. We will also explore why Kit Harington walked away from Jon Snow permanently, what Casey Bloys has said about the franchise’s future, and how the prequel strategy avoids the narrative complications of continuing the original story. 1.
