This is all so they can control the market, monopolise prices and prevent resells and shares between friends. That way, they can still sell at egregious prices. In addition, this will also lead to ownership being a thing of the past, where you are paying 80 dollars for a licence that can be revoked at any time, which we just saw happen to over 500 titles of movies and shows people bought, with no recourse provided, meaning thousands lost in the process. And if they lose a licence and shut down a sever, the console becomes a brick and those games are lost forever. We just saw that happen with several PS3 games, but with the physical discs still being an option; not anymore.
It fucking sucks. You will own nothing and be happy.

Here’s hoping the EU consumer laws save us all one more time because this sucks.

I knew when Rockstar announced GTA 6, the biggest entertainment launch ever soon, wasn’t going to have a disc that it was going to create a flood. It gave other companies the chance to follow. This just really sucks.

GameStop stocks tanking as we speak. This pretty much spells the end for brick and mortar game retailers, unless they pivot hard into retro stuff.

I’ve gotten a new generation PlayStation each release since the 2 in 2002, and I’m probably not getting a 6. I was already planning not to, but this news just pushes it over; as seen with the movies removed last month, nothing you get from a download is really safe anymore. I get that discs probably aren’t cheap to make anymore, but at the same time, I do not trust Sony or Microsoft or whoever else with sole control of access to all the games or if a server is gone or license is lost, and without a drive to accept any other media like DVDs, there wouldn’t be much to do with it without breaking it open to tinker or something.

Video games stores will die because of this

I’m so sick of everything being awful all the time. There is demand for physical media, especially from the younger generation. We want to *own* our stuff, not risk having it taken away due to licensing agreements (like Sony and PlayStation).

didn’t you guys know, just because you buy something doesn’t mean you own it 🙃

Well the PS5 is officially the last Sony Console i’ll ever buy.

This is beyond fucked up on so many levels. I cannot believe this is real like physical media is great because it lets you own the movie or game that you have and if PlayStation is literally going that far to discontinue production on physical game copies in 2028, then that is gonna be the biggest fuck up on their part. This is just wrong on so many levels I mean, we are literally living in the worst timeline right now and the fact that I just found out today that 85% of gamers buy their game digitally so they could give two fucks about the physical games being driven out of business and they’re part of the problem. It looks like the PS5 with the disc drive is truly my last PlayStation console because there’s no way I’m buying a PS6 with no disc drive in it and possibly being completely digital. First PlayStation removes all the digital movies from their customers and now them doing this shit? Just wow play really does have limits.

Technofeudalism is a modern economic theory where massive tech giants operate like medieval feudal lords. Instead of controlling physical land, they control digital platforms, algorithms, and cloud spaces.

Oh for fuck’s sake.
I always buy my husband a game for his birthday. Getting him a card and an instruction for what he’s got to go digitally download just isn’t the same.

Either
1) they reverse.
2) I buy the new Xbox (haven’t owned one since the 360) if they do

You never really own anything anymore.
Also means libraries can no longer lend PS games.
Push back as hard as you can.

Thankfully, nintendo hasn’t followed suit.
