I’m so glad we are finally having these conversations publicly, and my heart aches for my mom and grandma, and other generations of women before me who didn’t have access to knowing anything about perimenopause.

Amen ladies 🙏 Perimenopause is no joke 😫 I too thank the doctors or scientists or WHOEVER created HRT every day because it is a game-changer.

40?! Last year, at 36 my gyno told me it was plausible my issues were all peri because my cycle started when I was 9. When my blood tests ruled out any major problems, she was like “perimenopause can start 10-12 years before menopause hits, you’re getting older.” 36!!!

For ND women it can start significantly early and be more intense, apparently.

I feel like there should be some kind of compensation scheme or mandated holidays because it is a LOT.

I need to know what was shocking. We can talk about perimenopause but we can’t talk about *that* ?!

Had my first frozen shoulder at 39. Nobody mentioned that perimenopause was a possibility at the time even though there was no certain injury that would have set it off. Had my second one at 47 and, even then, the orthopedist and physical therapist just mentioned that it was more common in middle-aged women.

Perimenopause and menopause are crazy and it sucks. I’m jealous that penélope hasn’t experienced hot flashes bc they’re the bane of my existence right now. That and brain fog.

Okay the frozen shoulder thing stunned me because my mom got frozen shoulder in her early 40s and not one doctor said it was related to perimenopause. She was considering surgery when she got in a car accident and the seatbelt did it for her.

I also have ovarian cysts and yeah my periods are brutal. I am always appreciative when celebrities and high profile routes talk about these issues. Too often women’s health issues have been ignored or dismissed.

I’m really, really grateful to notable women like these two and Halle Berry for talking about menopause. It’s an issue that will affect a huge swatch of the population and yet there’s still so little understanding or information or preparation that is done to help us understand what is happening to us and our bodies.
Having women like Penelope and Olivia and Halle talk about their experiences, their symptoms, and so do it so frankly and honestly will only help us have the conversation as a society. I’m no celeb worshiper but you can’t deny their influence and I’m so happy to see this sort of thing being talked about. Props to them.

My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer last year, and her specific form of it was likely caused by her taking hormone supplements years ago during perimenopause and menopause. So we just can’t win.
(She is currently cancer-free. Thankfully they caught it early with her regular mammogram.)

I’m Canadian in my 40s so I’m gaslit by my doctors who tell me I can’t possibly have perimenopause. Even hot flashes are caused by anxiety, apparently even though they happen on certain times of the month, it never happened in my 20s and 30s. They won’t even test my hormones there’s nothing they can do for me about hormones, like those bioidentical hormones are not available in Canada. You can have antidepressants, antipsychotics, birth control, and labelled the pill seeker.

Just turned 40 this year and for the past 3 years, my periods have suddenly gone from horrendous to way way way more manageable. Even my PMS and PMDD don’t hit as hard as they did the majority of my life. Could it be that for some women, this hormonal shift is what finally mellows them out? Because I’ve never felt better or had a regular period before now.

I’m so glad people are actually talking about menopause nowadays because so many things can be caused by it and we’re not taught most of those in school. At least I wasn’t. One thing I learned about it recently was that if you don’t get the right hormones you can end up with atrophy in the vagina and your clit can disappear too. Estrogen cream or hrt can help prevent that. They also changed the guidelines on estrogen patches so now you can get them prescribed instead of the estrogen pill if you’ve had a stroke, at risk of stroke, or if you’ve had migraines with aura.

Please remember everyone that perimenopause is different for everyone!! It may or may not last 8-12 years SYMPTOMATICALLY. And those symptoms will vary wildly person to person.
Figure out what works for you and your symptoms and concerns. DO YOUR RESEARCH and read books like Estrogen Matters.

It is awesome that actresses are using their platforms to talk about this important issue. I came into it after i had been dealing for 10 years. I highly recommend reading this book. Naomi Watts Biography: All Things Menopause—And I’m Bold Enough to Say It. It changed my life and opinion on HRT. Been on it for a few months now, game changer. Symptoms have stopped. Next month I’ll finally be in menopause at almost 54. We must talk.

The median age worldwide is about 30- where I work the average employee is 44.5 and over 50% female. There is an entire cohort of perimenopausal or soon-to-be perimenopausal demographic, especially in North America, who will need health care support/access for menopause for the foreseeable future. Really sad that women will have disproportionate support because of systematic neglect of women’s health. I am not there yet but am already preparing to fight my doctor for hormones because of how my mom was gaslit and denied hormonal support and forced to get a hysterectomy and still deals with hot flashes.

I am STRUGGLING with menopause right now. I’m not sleeping, my energy is gone, I have this crazy brain fog that no one tells you about, and all my gynecologist seems to care about is the hot flashes.
My amazing PCP recognizes the entirety of my symptoms and has explained HRT and how much it has improved, even in just the past decade. He wants me to get on that, but thinks my gynecologist should be the one to get me started on it, but she doesn’t seem to think I need it because my hot flashes are controlled with Gabapentin.
I will probably end up begging my PCP to let me try the HRT. I’m struggling so much. I would just like to sleep again.
