Will Patrick Dempsey Run For Maine Senate Seat After Graham Platner Exit?

Does Patrick Dempsey have his eyes set on politics? The 60-year-old actor and Maine native addressed speculation that he could enter the Senate race in an op-ed published by the Portland Press Herald on July 8. In the lengthy article, Patrick expressed his love and support for his home state while also explaining why he isn’t going to run for the U.S. Senate. “Over the past several days, I’ve been asked a question more than once: Would you ever run for the United States Senate?” he wrote. “It’s flattering, and I don’t take it lightly. I love my home state of Maine. I care deeply about the people who live there, and, like so many Americans, I’m concerned about the direction our country is heading,” he added. Although Patrick wrote that he gave the question a “real thought” he ultimately decided politics wasn’t for him. “I realized the answer is no. Not because public service isn’t honorable — it absolutely is. But because I believe I can contribute more effectively through the life I’ve already built.” Patrick’s letter came amid calls for him to replace Democratic Senate candidate, Graham Platner, who was publicly accused of sexual assault. Platner has denied the allegations and confirmed in a video statement that he is withdrawing from the race. The Democratic Party has until July 27 to nominate a replacement.
