Fiona gave me this video to share.
She’s been trying to find a truthful way to speak to the enormity of what’s happening in the world, from the horror in Gaza and Sudan, to the cruelty being aimed at trans kids, to the assault on women’s bodily autonomy, to the abuse and terror being inflicted on immigrants and their families, to the erosion of voting rights and civil liberties, to the disappearance of Indigenous and Black children, so often met with silence, and to so much more suffering and injustice than can be named or addressed in a single statement.
This is where she is.

I don’t think she needs to blame herself or feel guilty. She’s more outspoken than 99% of celebs with her name recognition. Plus with her court watching history, she’s made a concrete impact on inequality outside of her art.
I absolutely love her. This only reinforces that

Being aware of her general privacy, I never thought of her silence as apathy; hearing and reading this from her is affirming all the same

It’s really hard to make sense of all the suffering happening right now. I know I couldn’t condense it into a song. But if anyone can do it, she can. She is one of the best living songwriters.
This is how many artists are feeling, big and small, known and unknown. We are stymied by the atmosphere. I don’t want to make something that’s so sincere it’s glib and cheesy, but not so subtle that no one will get it. I also want to make art that’s not about our current world but it feels rude and inauthentic. Stymied.
I get it. I’d rather listen to singers who recognize the shitshow for what it is. She’s always been a real one to me.
*Fetch the Bolt Cutters* was one of the very few good things about 2020.
Its overwhelming. And not on Fiona alone to speak out. I’ve felt myself in a numb state lately unsure what I CAN even say that matters. We love you Fiona 🥰
Fiona is a generational talent. I think about her output that began 30 years ago and the depth/quality/magic is unmatched – feels pretty significant she would break her silence now. I’d kill for another album but also hope she is doing good in the grand scheme
(Go listen to the Jon Brion version of extraordinary machine, now)
It’s nice to know that there’s a sledgehammer out there thinking slow and hard about how to strike the best she can. Take your time. ❤️
She wrote one of the most powerful protest songs of 2025, but the issue she sang about has been so buried under all of the other awful stuff I’m not sure how many people heard it:
