YouTuber Alex Meyers faced backlash over his review, “Obsession is an INSANE movie,” with viewers accusing him of sympathising with Bear, minimising Nikki’s victimisation and judging her more harshly than Bear (a rapist, and he also called the SA scene “symbolic”). His follow-up response was also criticised for focusing more on his intentions and the hostile messages he received than on the comments viewers objected to. Meyers has since deleted both videos and posted:
“I have taken down both videos relating to Obsession. I am sorry to those who were hurt by them. I will be more mindful of my words and jokes in the future.”

    1. Bear was never a *normal dude*. A normal person doesn’t make a wish like that in the first place. This guy’s denial of that is an admission in itself.

    2. Faux feminist men are all over right now. Outing themselves as soon as a woman says something that irks them.

    3. No_Biscotti_7110 on

I used to watch this guy’s videos, while some of his commentary was entertaining most of it was just based on his massive contrarianism

    4. Idkwhattoputbuthi on

How did Alex Meyers make it on this sub Reddit 😭😭😭 LMFAO

His video, comments, and apology was so fucking weird. I unsubscribed cus absolutely not

      Na bear sucked shit…
Worst dude to do a 2man with
You never wish a woman to like you
He knew the girl wasnt the girl but under some weird spell
Bear is the worst kind of guy the back door his way into a relationship

Bear makes my blood boil he fucking stinks on ice

    6. No-Effective388 on

I think people defending Bear as a good person don’t understand who he really is. The film itself actually explains it very good that Bear is not a good person.

    7. freckledbitchs on

Idk why people still watch that dude. He was funny years ago but ever since I swear his personality is being a contrarian.

Also the only reason he apologized is because he got backlash for it. That apology is bs too. ‘I’m sorry for those who got hurt by it’? Not ‘I’m sorry for being insensitive and ignorant’?

‘I will be more mindful of my words’ = ‘I’ll make sure to be more PC in the future but deep inside I still think Nikki’s a ho and men like Bear are victims’

    8. SuccessfulMammoth612 on

I used to watch his movie reviews 5 or so years ago and this isn’t surprising. He doesn’t quite have incel vibes but definitely has “girls didn’t like me in high school and I’ve never forgiven them for it” vibes. He always takes the side of the male lead who gets rejected. Honestly it made me stop watching his reviews. Not at all surprised he’d have empathy for Bear.

    9. i’m so totally hating the people going out of their way to make bear redeemable due to him being a “good guy” in the first 10 minutes

    10. welp-itscometothis on

I knew he was gonna get a ton of backlash. I was scrunching my face up the entire video. I don’t even remember him addressing the SA scene or he brushed through it pretty quickly and I thought that was telling. Idk how he thought he wasn’t going to cooked. He did acknowledge Bear being a bad person but there were just some underlying tones in his analysis that felt off.

    11. isaidwhatisaidok on

His initial video was really bad. He basically made it seem like Bear deserved praise for not taking advantage of Nikki the first night after the wish (before Bear knew it worked). He kept going on about how young/teenage girl crush on guys and how what Bear did isn’t that different even though it totally is because Bear is a gross ass man who violated a woman for his own pleasure.

The guy clearly has some unresolved stuff from his youth in relation to women and it permeates all of his videos. He chose the wrong movie to direct his brand of misogyny at.

    12. I watched this video. He’s actually disgusting. Years ago when I watched his Disney videos, he always gave off a Nice Guy vibe, very “nice guys finish last.”

He constantly downplayed the evilness of Bear while sexualising Nikki. His main deflection point was that Bear was a villain but he wasn’t always a villain and he didn’t know any better 👉👈. Meanwhile he said “to his credit” when talking about Bear not immediately assaulting Nikki. Called Nikki a “crystal Latina mommy.”

Apparently he didn’t call the rape scene “rape” in his so-called apology video either. Just mentioned it in a pinned braindead comment. It was also a very “I’m sorry you got offended” video.

And to no one’s surprise, men in the comments were all supporting him, saying it’s “just a movie, move on” or “why can’t you accept his opinion on the movie” or “feminists and LGBTQ channels are attacking you now, ignore them” when it’s pretty clear his opinions are dangerously misogynistic.

I’m glad this movie is like a litmus test to separate men you should stay away from in your life if they ever sympathise with Bear.

From what I’ve learned he’s also almost 40, divorced once and broken up with by his gf now. Good on the ladies.

Edit: If anyone reading this is interested in an actual, well-articulated review of the movie, I highly recommend the Dead Meat Podcast’s episode on it. James and Chelsea absolutely nail it as always. AND they have another episode interviewing the director Curry Barker.

    13. MycologistStock8296 on

Youtube recommends this guy to me all the time. I’ve tried and his media analysis basically boils down to being contrarian, so I’m not a big fan. Not surprised if he said something weird about this movie too.

    14. Electronic-Fig2283 on

There were several subtle, red flags even before he made the wish. He seemed to idealise Nikki and dreamed of what she could do for him, rather than seeing her for who she was. He didn’t understand that love and romance is not the same. He took Ian’s advice to neg Nikki instead of being honest like the woman recommended – and still refused to be honest when Nikki was clearly wanting him to be open and honest. He was not a fundamentally evil villain in the beginning, but he was stuck in a selfish and cowardish mindset that ultimately led him to evilness when shit started to go down.

    15. somehow not shocking at all. i stopped watching him a while ago bc there was only so many “erm….this kids movie was WEIRD right 😅😅” videos i could take

    16. Haven’t watched his take, but isn’t the whole point of the movie that bear is such a coward that he turns into a villain? At least that’s what I took from it.

I don’t think he expected the wish to work, because who would? Once it did, that’s when truly turns into an absolute scumbag POS who should’ve ‘exited’ the wish immediately if you know what I mean.

Also the cat scene, that was shitty but also just an accident. I don’t think that necessarily makes him evil from the jump.

    17. The way men have responded to this movie (and on a less important scale Inde) has made me pretty depressed

    18. I stopped watching him after he was so far off with his Matilda (1996) review. Made me question if he actually watches the movie all the way through

He pretty much said that Matilda started reading and became one of those quirky girls whose personality is all about books. Like no, she started reading and fell in love with books because it was her way to escape the abuse and negligence she faced at home.

And he even did this weird part where he made up an erotic story that he believes Miss Honey would have written between her and Sonic. So weird and gross

(Edited to add what he said in his Matilda review)

    19. verytinybears on

the movie opens with him >!killing his cat by leaving loose pills out mixed in with spilled food on the ground!< and idk why people keep glossing over that fact but i would not personally count it as normal dude behaviour

    20. SquidwardIsTired on

Media literacy is at an all time low I have seen people saying bear was the victim like what?!

    21. afreelittle_flower on

I always thought it was weird that he promoted vibrators during a teeny bopper film review

    22. I stopped watching years ago since all his videos are repetitive and just summaries of the movies instead of actually reviewing it, and the TV show ones are just lazy since he only watches the first episode.

    23. subtlewhisper on

I stopped watching his videos ages ago. He is always negative and doesn’t have anything nice to say. Maybe that’s the humour of the channel, but it got old quick.

    24. Successful-Ad-5561 on

I remember watching the Alex Meyers video and the amount of times he REALLY emphasized “oh but props to him because he could done something bad here but he only did something slightly bad” is crazy. Like are we really patting this man on the back because he didn’t SA Nikki the second he had the chance?

When I first watched the movie, I considered the scene where >!Bear freaks out about fake/possessed Nikki using the phrase “didn’t take advantage of me,” even though she was clarifying that he didn’t, so important . He even shouts “You came onto me! You came onto me!” after she breaks out of it for a second during their first kiss.!< Both of these scenes immediately showed that Bear didn’t really care about Nikki’s mental/emotional state, he was just stuck on not being seen as antagonistic. After that, no one can really say he loved or admired her at all because if he did, her wellbeing would be his main concern. Not trying to prove that he didn’t SA her; that’s something you do when you have a guilty conscience.

I would’ve assumed people would notice the same thing. FUNNILY ENOUGH, MEYERS ALSO EMPHASIZED HOW SHE CAME ONTO HIM and he barely would go into any of the tinier details that show why Bear sucks ass. Also all the fucking crystal girl and Latina mommy jokes he was making were so fucking annoying, I started wondering if he’d always been like that and I had just missed it. Sigh.

When he skipped over talking about the diner scene, I just closed the video. I’m glad everyone in the comments on YouTube also called him out.

    25. imyourdruidess420 on

Bear was a villain the moment he left that pill bottle open and within reach of the cat (presumably) and then THREW HIS CAT IN THE TRASH 😭
So yeah, from the very beginning.

    26. “guys it’s just jokes!!! im just joking!!! god guess ill have to not ever make a joke again” 😬🙄

    27. I need to watch this movie. Everyone talks about it and I dont wanna spoil it for myself but it seems like a lot of controversial stuff is coming out of it

    28. mayflowerss98 on

I stopped watching his videos a while ago because I just found them so exhausting having to hate on literally everything you watch. Like what a waste of time. Nitpicking every tiny thing. Like dude, just watch something and turn your brain off every once in a while. I get that it’s his job but I couldn’t do it.

    29. D’Angelo has the deleted review and apology on Youtube if anyone wants to see both. The review was actually so much WORSE than I was expecting.

    30. Lately, I’ve been having trouble watching YouTube videos because it seems like people are expressing really stupid opinions. I’m not even watching movie reviews like I used to…

    31. Adorable-Print7543 on

I used to like his videos but i unsubscribed immediately after watching the obsession video. I can’t rewatch any of his videos without getting incel vibes from him.

Alex Meyers always gave me the ick. Especially when he spoke about/ mentions women and relationships in his videos. This does not surprise me in the slightest.

    33. onlythewinds on

For some reason by brain read “Alex Meyers” as “Alexis Neiers” and was beyond confused.

    34. Perfect-Effect5897 on

Alex’s humour is for immature little boys so I’m not at all surprised he has an immature little boy response to this.

    36. Minute-Teach4507 on

I clocked this years ago lol, I unsubscribed when I realised that a lot of his comments about women were leaning super incel. He’s been a weirdo for a while.

    37. Perfect-Effect5897 on

He literally had to read off his phone to say that he respects women. what a joke
