Super super super icky to me to parade ancient artefacts acquired unethically and dubiously from Iran. I only came across this because an archeologist was criticising another who was gushing over how “cool” it was to repurpose them when they could have just used replicas instead.

Oh yikes. Between this and the dress that was flown private, Zendaya’s fashions choices are getting pretty controversial. This situation kind of reminds me of Kim wearing Marilyn Monroe’s dress.

Edit: I never said I was personally offended about Zendaya’s choices, my comment was more neutral in tone. I love her as an actress but when any celebrity wears something that’s considered historic or an artifact there’s going to be feedback.

If they’re undisclosed, how can you leap to the conclusion that they were stolen? It’s undisclosed.

    3. Wide-Can1349 on

Yeah, please remember these people don’t care about anything no matter how cute they seem in interviews

    4. OnikaBurgerBomb on

So you’re basing this off of one woman’s reel where she says it was acquired through “means undisclosed, then editorializing it as “unethically and dubiously from Iran” as if it were a proven fact?

The artefacts are in the collection of London Barron for years [https://barron-london.com/collection](https://barron-london.com/collection)
They are not for sale and are lent out

      https://preview.redd.it/wiiy3kj4z1dh1.png?width=802&format=png&auto=webp&s=9952cba383e9e69d96b765a1bbd1a13dd22cecaf

Edit: They are from the [Ziwiye hoard – Wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziwiye_hoard) and the sources are undisclosed as they were not excavated by archeologists but local shepherds and sold worldwide to art dealers before they could be assessed by experts:
The archaeologist [Oscar White Muscarella](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_White_Muscarella) has questioned the whole account of the finding of the hoard (as he has done with the older [Oxus Treasure](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oxus_Treasure)), pointing out that none of the items were excavated under archaeological conditions, but passed through the hands of dealers. He concludes that “there are no objective sources of information that any of the attributed objects actually were found at Ziwiye, although it is probable that some were”, and that the objects have no historical and archaeological value as a group”,[^([5])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziwiye_hoard#cite_note-5) although many are genuine and “exquisite works of art”.[^([6])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziwiye_hoard#cite_note-6) In a later work Muscarella denounced several “Ziwiye” objects as modern forgeries.[^([7])](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziwiye_hoard#cite_note-7)

I may be out of the loop, but could we not jump to the worst and think perhaps these are from a private collection?

There is still the issue of private collections as a whole, but jumping directly to Iran feels like it glosses over some less atrocious sources.

Eager to be educated if there’s back story I’m missing.

    7. Does anyone feel like this is lowkey targeted ? Like with the dress- now this, what is it.. zendaya smear week ? But also it’s prolly just weird timing of both these stories dropping and nothing more

    8. saranautilus on

Icky? Yes. Personally on Zendaya? I’m not sure here. I mean, I’m open to it being gross on her part but the knee jerk reaction to hold her personally responsible seems a little sus. I think we’re a little too quick to tear down a woman in her prime without hearing her out. That said, she could come out with a full throated endorsement of this kind of shenanigans next week and then we can talk 😂

    9. This is a non-issue that people need to get over.

    10. “Her co-star Anne Hathaway, who plays Penelope in the film based on Homer’s epic poem, was similarly inspired by antiquity. Hathaway wore a Bulgari Monete Catene high jewelry secret watch in rose gold and diamonds, its sliding cover set with an ancient silver coin bearing the likeness of the Roman emperor Caracalla, who ruled from 198 AD until his assassination in 217 AD.”

So really we just need to stop with the presser theming if it’s going to get this destructive. It’s getting weird and wasteful and questionable now.

the amount of anti zendaya stuff at the moment seems very suspicious

in the words of Nene Leakes, it’s getting weird.

    12. I’ve been seeing press about her (and Tom to a lesser extent) A LOT lately and it feels like a controversy is on the horizon, not even because she’s controversial but because overexposure is a very real risk for famous women. When you’re the people’s princess, any detail about your life that makes those people feel isolated could spell trouble for you. Of course, she’s a rich celebrity. There are LOTS of details that would probably anger the average chronically online individual.

    13. Meat-Dimension on

Law Roach broke into a museum and stole them himself

      He’s that committed

    14. I’m excited to see this upcoming debate on Zendayas 3000 yo areola earrings that nobody knew existed a couple hours ago and whether or not she is wrong for it.

    15. BusyBeeBridgette on

The woman is throwing out a lot of conjecture. Innocent until proven otherwise.

    16. chaoticinfinity on

I would be ecstatic to find out a piece of jewelry I made is still being paraded and honored, thousands of years later. I would be ecstatic to know that it continued to bring joy and beauty forth. Also, they were borrowed, the source is known..? It feels like she is honoring the pieces?

    17. prisonerofazkabants on

so she got some jewelry from a jeweler who made the earrings and some of y’all are acting like she went grave robbing in ancient mesopotamia

    18. Ok I have to ask why there is a very obvious smear campaign being ran against Zendaya? I am very “beautiful gowns” about her but the nitpicking and attacks on her are very much not organic.

And no I don’t think people care deeply that a celeb had a dress flown over either. And this latest seems utterly fake

    19. Feels like there are some artifacts that can occasionally come out in specific scenarios to help boost the public knowledge about them/get more interest in them.  I don’t think there’s much harm in this

    20. Coriolanuscangetit on

Acquired “unethically” and “dubiously” bc the shepherds that found it sold it before someone could take it away from them?

    21. This and having her stylist put one dress on a private jet just so she can wear it to a premiere?

It’s interesting how ppl praised her and Tom Holland like crazy, and it turns out she does rich ppl stuff like other rich people.

    22. The artifacts are from a private collection, not grave robbed. People are just hunting for reasons to hate Zendaya

    23. Groundbreaking_War52 on

This is much ado about nothing.

There are tens of thousands of decorative pieces from antiquity that have survived to the common era.

Many of the pieces that are the rarest, most complete, and with the most compelling provenance are in museums or with research / preservation professionals.

Many of them are also in private hands because they were unearthed on private or unclaimed property and collectors were willing to pay good money for them. Sometimes it is even the museums themselves who sell them off to make room for more special artifacts.

    24. BrushFantastic3170 on

The amount of historians/archaeologists in the comments is truly astounding

    25. I love zendaya but i don’t think 3,000 year old jewelry should be lent out to *anyone*. Like, that’s actually crazy lol

    26. probloodmagic on

Er, so, OP, where’s your source that they’re of an “undisclosed” source, because there’s a difference between an undisclosed source and an underresearched source. Was the means just not disclosed to you in particular? Because while that may be true, you’re misconstruing the two. Good to know how words are defined and be precise in their use in case some lawyer starts bringing up the word “libel” and you don’t know how to defend yourself.

    27. Sea-Cicada-4214 on

So just because something’s old we have to let it sit in a museum…? It’s cooler if somewhere wears it
