Jon Bernthal praises the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy: “For me, there’s no one else in the world who could have done that, who comes with a level of beauty both inside and out that you believe somebody would [go to war for]… I’m just so glad it was her.”

When I heard Lupita was cast as Helen of Troy, I literally went “Duh. Perfect casting.”
Like, obviously beauty is in the eye of the beholder, yadda yadda yadda, but good grief give a gold medal to the casting team of The Odyssey.
And suck it, rightwing chuds who think eurocentric beauty is the baseline standards.
EDIT: LOL FIRST REDDITCARES AWARD
So much has been written about a character that is barely in the movie.
He’s not wrong that’s for sure
Lupita is a perfect Helen, beautiful, glowy and an orange familiar
Meanwhile, jon bernthal should not have been in this movie.
I’m so done with the fake outrage people are spewing on the internet just to get some attention. Lupita is a gorgeous woman and we are literally talking about a story based in Greek mythology. Come the fuck on.. Also people are failing to understand how connected the Greek world was to the rest of the world. Black people existed in ancient Greece.
I want someone to put together a chart showing how much media was dedicated to being outraged by the casting of black actresses. Between this and the little mermaid, it has to be something crazy
Go see the (fantastic) film — her casting is completely inconsequential! She’s perfect in the role but the role is minimal, like many of them in the film, and she even plays two characters, ha!
I feel like the correct reading of Helen of Troy is that she could literally be almost any attractive woman. The whole point is that the wrong two dudes were like “She will be mine!” and now we have a whole war.
Like, was Franz Ferdinand the most influential ruler in the world? Nah, but he’s killed and now the whole world is at war and millions die. Helen gets taken and whoops now we have to go have a whole war!
Not so much for this take specifically but this dude strikes me as so performative
I can’t stand his cop loving ass, I don’t care how correct he is here.
She was fantastic in the film.
Rare Jon Bernthal win
I just came out of the film and I thought her Helen was fantastic. I was a big fan of how they did her hair!
He looks absolutely bizarre now but this is also exactly how I feel about her casting. Unreal and intense beauty
