The Cold Truth About Robin Scherbatsky (How I Met Your Mother)

Everyone calls Robin Scherbatsky cold. Emotionally unavailable. The woman who couldn’t love anyone back. But that was never the truth.

In this video, we decode the cold truth about Robin Scherbatsky — the father who raised her as the son he wanted, the career that was never ambition but escape, the infertility scene that revealed everything she’d been pretending not to feel, and why she ran from both Ted and Barney. Robin didn’t run because she couldn’t love. She ran because nobody ever taught her how.

This is the story of a woman who spent forty years being someone else’s idea of who she should be — and only learned how to open the window when it was almost too late.

    1. This is a really cool break down! So many people in the world are taught love is something else, and your analysis gives Robin a chance to be human. This would be a cool series to do with television characters, especially since we learn from what we watch. Cheers!

    2. I don’t like Robin, but the episode where she described the group as two married people I don't see, my ex husband, and a guy who I should have been with with the mother of his kids. That broke me

    3. Her dad had his own wrong image of who she was, Tad had his different one but also false image. Non of them saw her really, non of them listened to her, non of them did really loved her and cared about her. Both of them wanted something from her for themselves. End is not happy for Robin, but Tad wins.

    4. I think you are off about the children thing. She doesn’t like children, doesn’t want them. When she told Kevin she couldn’t have kids and he was saying they could find another way to be parents she doubled down on she not only can’t have children but doesn’t want them and even breaks up with Kevin because of it despite loving him. I think hearing that she is infertile upset her for a different reason.
Society links fertility and child birth to what makes a woman to the point that transphobes try to use a trans woman’s inability to carry a child to invalidate her gender identity. Robin has had a very shaky relationship with her own femininity and gender identity her whole life and being told she was infertile was just another thing to contest her gender identity.

    5. if you look at the timeline of how long ted and the mother were together it was 11 years Tracy loved b4 and was afraid to love again in the second to last episode Tracy says life only moves forward ted and robin only dated season 2 the mother had him for 11 years and Victoria the girl who wanted him to stop talking to robin last thing she said was i hope you get her someday Tracy included robin in events she knew how much she meant to ted LIFE ONLY MOVES FOWARD that's what the shows about

    6. When I saw the series finale, I felt completely ripped off. Instead of calling it *How I Met Your Mother*, they should have called it *How I Finally Ended Up with Robin*.

And as for Ted saying "I love you" on the first date… honestly, that's a huge red flag. I'd run and never look back.

    7. sure she is deeply traumatized by her childhood. Many people are. But in your adult life you start to take responsibility for your own actions and decisions. So your analysis kind of sucks. Yes, she had a childhood trauma, but even people who were raped, beaten or insulted on daily basis find strength to survive and live a happy life. Her life was not that tragic that we should sit here and cry about her tragedy. Being an autist goes often in families though, so maybe her strange father and herself are more alike than she would like to think…

    8. 9:08 nahh, I think it is lazier than that…. She did all the things she wanted, a traveling journalist, an overseas journalist, married, and live a full life and THEN she "settles down" with Ted. It's lazy, it's bull shit. Almost manipulative. She USES Ted. Keeps him at arms length the entire time THEN after she is fulfilled in life, that is when she is willing to accept Ted fully.

    9. Robin used to be my most hated character when i first watched this as a teenager, but when i got married and divorced 10 years later, i understood life and she became my favorite

    10. The truth is worse than that. Its that ted would never have gotten back with robin without the kids existing. If they did he would have eventually left her anyway. So instead he went and got kids and then went to robin after. Thats not love. Thats an afterthought. Thats someone whos already lived their life and decided oh shes there why not. Thats not a love story. Thats a throwaway

    11. I think you’re right on with this. I picked up on her fear and avoidance early on, though I didn’t understand it anywhere near the depth you’ve explained it. I had felt that there was a soft loving person buried at the bottom of a locked closet in the back of a party room. What you’ve laid out here has been pretty amazing to me. This Robin Scherbatsky is a very plausible person. I know someone very well who is a LOT like Robin. She’s always been a hell of a fun woman that in varying yet similar ways was raised with a hard edge and taught never to cry or show emotions unless she’s standing up for herself …and she too never wanted children.

Robin and Ted may have only dated for a very short time but the show teased us about Robin and Ted getting together throughout the entire series.

I’m not lessening the tragedy of Tracy‘s death. I wouldn’t. It’s tragic and was heart wrenching for me too. I’ve devotedly watched a LOT of TV shows in my lifetime and none of them had the depth or meaning that How I Met Your Mother did solely because of Tracy’s part in it and the ramifications from it. Made all the more impactful because it hit like a slap in the face and punch in the gut all at once at the very end of the series.

But just taking into consideration the plain truth that you’ve laid out here so well, as well as my own personal understanding of her character, when Robin looked out of that window and Ted looked up at her holding that blue french horn, the look on their faces looked to me like that of two old friends that are just happy to be together.

And I like to think that, though she would never be a mother and never was a mother, that as their stepmother she would become motherly in a very loving way and got to finally have that in her life.
