Judith Ann Hawkins was born in Liverpool, England, in 1939 and moved to the United States at age 10. She is white, of English and German descent. She worked for decades as a psychiatric nurse at the Cleveland VA Hospital.

Judith met Halle’s father, Jerome Jesse Berry, while working at the hospital. He was an African American hospital attendant. Their interracial marriage in the 1960s was abusive. Halle witnessed the abuse as a child.

GROWING UP BIRACIAL
Halle is biracial — her mother is white, her father is Black. Growing up, she and her sister were called names because of their mixed-race family. Berry has said she felt “confused” about her identity.
Her mother told her: “You will be perceived as Black”.
A YEAR OF SILENCE
When Halle first moved to New York to pursue acting, she asked her mother for money. Judith said no. Halle stopped speaking to her for a year. She later realized it was “tough love” that made her stronger and more determined.
