Oprah Winfrey Reveals Last-Minute Change Behind “You Get a Car” Moment | E! News

Oprah Winfrey shared one of the last-minute changes she made during the now iconic “You get a car” episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004 to help ensure the massive gifts would all be a surprise. In a Vanity Fair video posted July 21, the media mogul recalled waking up in a panic the night before filming after realizing the keys inside the gift boxes had not been taped down—meaning the 276 audience members could discover the surprise simply by shaking them. Winfrey also clarified why she had to repeatedly shout her now-famous line, “You get a car! You get a car! Everybody gets a car!” explaining that the excited audience initially did not understand that everyone was receiving a new 2005 Pontiac G6. The talk show host also recalled how her team worked through the night to replace small bows on the vehicles with giant red bows so each winner could drive home with the full celebratory moment intact.
