KJ Apa talks about his relationship with eating and his eating disorder during ‘Riverdale’. He talks about the time when he binged a bunch of McDonald’s, threw it up, pissed on some of it, then ate the remainder that wasn’t covered in pee

Good for him shedding light on a real issue that affects both women & men.
This made me sad for him
Honestly, I appreciate him being so candid. Part of the glamorization of eating disorders comes in the form of hiding the more disgusting aspects of them. If you spend time in bulimia spaces, you’ll see that eating vomitted food, eating food from the garbage, etc, is not uncommon unfortunately. It’s a horrific disease.
Society: Men should open up more about their feelings and experiences.
Also society: Ewwww what the hell is this man doing and why is he being so messy about it
No one wins in a patriarchy
Why would he urinate on it? To stop himself from eating the rest?
Medias obsession with putting a certain look for both men and women is a problem. Eating disorders is no joke, and as gross as this story sounds, this is such a sad reality for him and so many others who end up hurting themselves to maintain an unrealistic body shape, and for people who dont end up getting the help they need.
so important to hear other men be open about these struggles.
it’s definitely a gross way to go about it but I don’t think people understand how bad eating disorders really are. they make you do insane shit
This is very sad
I felt very sad listening to this, even though they were talking about it humorously. I’ve heard similar stories from people with EDs trying to “ruin” food so they don’t binge, only for their compulsion to win anyway. I get that it’s graphic but this is not a situation warranting a shame response from people. The desperation highlights how humiliating and overwhelming eating disorders are as a disease. I hope he’s doing better.
I hope he’s in a better place now with his ED.
Lets not turn from this because it sounds gross or off-putting ruining food is incredibly common in eds, I would throw out everything that tempted me and pour cleaner over it. It feels awful and that shame goes a long way in keeping people sick, I am glad he can be so candid
Oh, that poor guy…
Reminds me of Miranda in SATC when she throws the chocolate cake in the trash and then can’t help herself and tries to eat some of it
oof oof oof all of this is so familiar and i hate that
I applaud him for being candid. Struggling with disordered eating is no joke and can drive you to do some absolutely crazy things. I’m glad he’s doing better and is able to talk about it.
Holy shit. I feel bad for him. I cannot begin to imagine what kind of mind space you have to be in to go through that.
Damn, I hope he can avoid that monster for the rest of his life, and have a successful and healthy relationship with his body and eating food
Respect for him for being open about this, despite how disgusting the whole story is. Eating disorders have gotten way too glamorized on social media over the last few years and rarely touch on the gross aspects of it. Not to mention that it’s often treated as something that only women deal with it and not men.
Good to hear male voices talking about ED, because it’s so heavily talked about as something only from a female perspective.
A bit like when Freddy Flintoff (England cricketer) spoke about his experiences with ED, it’s important for people to hear it’s something that affects everyone.
it’s really easy to develop an ED 😞
From what I’ve seen in addict behaviours, an ED can be eerily similar. It takes over your entire life and can wreak havoc on your reasoning. Yes this story is gross, but it is a reality many people face and unfortunately ED in men especially often goes unnoticed due to the stigma. Props to him for being candid.
Holy shit I think this is one of the most candid I’ve heard a male celebrity talking about ED
This took a hell of a lot of courage to be this vulnerable about a horrible disorder. Bravo and I hope he can remain supported.
I don’t know if the other guys appreciated how vulnerable he was being by saying that. I hope he’s in a better place now, EDs are super hard to recover from.
From what I remember of that show they were always finding nonsense reasons to make him take his shirt off so this is sadly not surprising. I feel so terrible for him.
Between this and him falling asleep while driving when he finished on set due to the crazy hours it sounds like this show was a cesspool of a work environment
The hosts did not handle this conversation with the level of care it needed. I didn’t enjoy their laughing and joking when he was trying to be vulnerable.
Once used a mesh filter to remove ants from my alcohol in the morning and drank the filtered result. Never shared this with anyone. This dude being so candid genuinely made me candid enough to share that to strangers in the void, maybe one day it’ll be people I know.
I know objectively it’s not that gross because we as people come into contact with bugs regarding our food wayy more than we think. But the act was humiliating, the result of it. I regret it all the time, I wish I could slap younger me. But older me isn’t doing all that much better. So I give him grace.
