In How I Met Your Mother Season 2, Episode 9, Lily is forced to make another official ruling in Barney and Marshall’s increasingly dangerous slap bet.

After the truth about Robin’s mysterious past begins to unravel, Lily gives Barney two punishment options. He can either take ten slaps immediately and get the pain over with, or allow Marshall to keep five slaps that can be delivered at any time and in any place.

Ted strongly advises Barney to choose the ten immediate slaps. It would be painful, but once they were finished, Barney would never have to worry about them again.

Robin sees the situation differently. Five slaps sound much better than ten, so she believes the second option is the smarter deal.

But Ted points out the terrifying downside.

By choosing the five permanent slaps, Barney would have to spend every day wondering when Marshall might strike. It could happen at the bar, at work, during dinner, or in the middle of an important moment. Marshall would have complete control over the timing.

Barney ignores the psychological torture and chooses the five slaps.

Marshall immediately begins enjoying his new power. When he casually reaches for a drink, Barney flinches and covers his face, convinced that the first slap is coming. Marshall calmly explains that he was only grabbing a soda—but promises that the future is going to be very entertaining.

However, the slap bet soon takes another unexpected turn.

Marshall accidentally reveals to Lily that Robin was never actually married. Since Marshall and Lily tell each other everything that happens during their day, he casually mentions the truth while describing his investigation at the library.

As the official slap bet commissioner, Lily cannot protect Marshall simply because he is her fiancé. She informs Barney that Marshall delivered his earlier slap before the bet had been properly resolved.

Barney immediately demands justice.

Lily reviews the case and rules that Barney may slap Marshall three times: one slap for hiding the truth and two additional slaps as punishment for the premature slap.

For one brief moment, Barney finally gets revenge. But his victory does not erase the five terrifying slaps Marshall still has waiting for him.
