I don’t think they did the best marketing for this film. Even the trailer was confusing. Some people saw it and said they liked it, other people saw and said they didn’t like the movie. A mixed bag.

    2. They lost me at the Tom Cruise jerk off session trailer. Yeah, he’s been in a bunch of movies — what’s this one about?

    3. I guess we’re watching different trailers cause the movie trailer is pretty straightforward. Old oil tycoon has to save the world after his industry and his decisions messed everything up. It has a twist but the main story is that. Fantastic film and it was great seeing Cruise in that role. Plemons was absolutely phenomenal as well.

Why is it that everytime I see someone talk about this movie it’s about how bad or what a flop it is? It’s almost like a negative marketing tactic.

If it’s a bad movie no one would watch it, those who watch it wouldn’t recommend it and nobody talks about it and it dies on it’s own.

The only place I keep hearing about this movie is Reddit. Really tired of hearing about it honestly.

I guess folks weren’t ready for Cruise to run back Steven Seagal’s 1994 magum opus, On Deadly Ground.

    7. > For reference, the movie needs $350 million globally to break even because theater owners get to keep about half of ticket sales. A Warner Bros. spokesperson had pushed back, saying the film’s break-even point is $300 million.

      Oh, well… that’s much better.

    8. When it comes to this movie, if you’re only going by what you’ve heard – without any attempt to arrive at the truth on your own – you are ineligible to mock trump voters. If you’ve spread negativity about the movie without seeing it, you’ll have to explain how you’re different than a fox news lemming.

    9. I loved this movie. Such a shame that we’re unlikely to see Cruise take on a project as interesting as this again.

I do think the marketing campaign was a bit poorly thought out/executed though and ultimately that’s why the movie just isn’t doing well.

With all these posts talking about this movie being a failure, I figure they’ll get at least a slight boost.

Its really not that original and its really making fun of itself and the massive budget it somehow got

    12. I do really want to see it and I think Tom Cruise is a good actor but I’ll wait til streaming. I don’t think movies like this can do well at the theater anymore.

Question for anyone who’s seen it: is it a secret musical? The marketing to me screamed “this is one of those movies that turns out to be a musical but we’re gonna try not to let you know that in the trailers.”

Doesn’t matter Hollywood accounting guarantees they’ll still come out ahead.

    15. I don’t have an answer to how I would have marketed this movie but I really enjoyed it.

I saw it in IMAX and I have to say I had a much better time than seeing The Odyssey. The production design is incredible as well as the sound design. Cruise is great as well as the rest of the cast.

Highly recommended if you like weird movies.

    16. I only know about this movie because of the articles talking about what a flop it is. Probably should have been marketed better. Still can’t tell you what it is about.
