the movie also made Andrew Lloyd Webber a dog person btw.

      >Sir
Andrew Lloyd Webber was so affected by the disastrous reception of this movie, that he ended up adopting a Havanese puppy and had the dog registered as a therapy pet. When asked by the airline via a note, asking if he really needed the dog, Lloyd Webber responded “Yes, just see what Hollywood did to my musical ‘Cats’.” The airline sent an approval back with a note saying “No doctor’s report required.”

    2. A genuinely great movie, Six Degrees of Separation, is about a con man who claims to be the son of Sidney Poitier. The con man tells the marks that his dad was convinced to direct a film version of Cats while he was trying to convince producers why no one could ever make a film version of Cats.

    3. “Cats” felt like a practical joke that got very out of control.

The behind the scenes featurette they released as promotion was exactly like one of those parody skits full of celebrities being ridiculous that BBC do for Red Nose Day fundraising.

    4. Look, I’ll probably get attacked by the theater nerds for this, but Cats is a fever dream as it is. I don’t really understand the appeal of the musical itself, other than by this point it’s Broadway royalty. It’s a little too campy and over the top for me, even as a stage show. Of course the star-studded film version was going to be a hot mess. The source material is crazy to begin with.

I think the only way Cats could have ever worked as a movie would have been as a highly stylised animation. Steven Spielberg actually worked on one at some point and the concept art looks very cool.

She’s right. As someone who actually likes the musical, it could’ve been done way better than it was. The creepy CGI was a major issue, but I also think the tone of the show was too self deprecating and almost embarrassed of how silly it is, while the actual Broadway show is played straight and I think that’s a major reason it works. It felt like many of the actors were playing it in a “isn’t this ridiculous?” way, especially James Corden and Rebel Wilson. That attitude dragged down the show nearly as much as the bad CGI, in my opinion. Many performances were actually quite good, such as Skimbkeshanks and Gus the Theater Cat and I even enjoyed Taylor Swift’s part because she really committed. And I even enjoyed them changing it to make Victoria the main character/POV character. I think there was a way to do it right, this just wasn’t it. The filmed stage version was honestly all that was needed.

    7. Every single decision made in this film was the wrong one. Every single one. They didnt even use the iconic good version of Jerry & Teaser’s song, they used the fuckass unsingable original composition everyone hates

The cats movie was so depressing from someone who loves the musical and wish they had leaned into using the actual costumes from the musical instead of that digital mess.

Loved Idris in it though! It was like his character from the office was a cat now. 😹

Good will? He voted against tax credits for disabled and low income members of the British public while living in New York. Abolish the House of Lords.

    10. I’d rather have a hundred Cats made with good intentions than a single Ben Shapiro slop film.
