Viola Davis about what she tells her daughter Genesis: “You are the love of your life. You have to start right now to have a radical love affair with yourself, to be in touch with your inner voice, what you like, what you don’t like, what’s crossing the boundaries, and you honor that.”

**So well said by the queen.**

    > “What I tell my daughter right now is, ‘Genesis, you are the love of your life,’ ” Davis tells PEOPLE in an interview for the magazine’s 50th anniversary special issue.

    > The Woman King star continues: “You have to start right now to have a radical love affair with yourself, to be in touch with your inner voice, what you like, what you don’t like, what’s crossing the boundaries, and you honor that. And through that, that is the seed where everything grows.”
    > “No one ever told me that. No one ever told me that I was the love of my life. I just counted myself out. If I have to be small in order to build up a relationship, I’ll make myself small. If I have to sacrifice my needs for others — that’s a big one for women, we are considered stronger when we sacrifice our needs. I said, ‘Genesis, no, do not do that. You are the love of your life, you and you alone.’ ”

  2. Wow that’s beautiful. I’m in public but I want to tear up. Nobody ever told me that either and I had to teach it to myself as an adult

I am not invalidating what she says at all, it is wisdom beyond measure, but I just CANNOT wrap my head around Viola Davis making herself small, ever. I’m sure she did, and she’s speaking from experience, but it’s just wild how social conditioning works against everyone, including a somewhat intimidating goddess like Viola.

Yes, you have to give yourself grace and acceptance. If you cannot love yourself it’s hard to accept from someone else. We show up so much for everyone else but it’s very difficult to accept and love yourself. The things we say to ourselves we won’t let anyone say about our friends or family. It’s a great lesson to teach the generations after us.
