A fashion expert has analysed the wardrobe choices of Queen Camilla, Princess Kate and Melania Trump during a state banquet, suggesting one of the outfits “didn’t hit the mark”.
Donald and Melania Trump have been in the UK this week for a second state visit. The wardrobe selections of the high-profile women in attendance were a hot topic of conversation.
Fashion editor Lauren Bulla was particularly struck by Melania’s outfit choice, singling out the First Lady’s attire as she strolled through Windsor Castle.
She commented: “The fully off the shoulder style feels quite uncharacteristic of her normal standard. I wonder if she had a different stylist for this occasion. The vibrant pink, almost Barbie pink belt and the slit doesn’t really feel appropriate for the occasion. It reads a bit out of place.”
Lauren suspects that Melania’s clothing choices might indicate a shift in style, suggesting that the 55-year-old may have “missed the mark”.
Lauren further noted: “It doesn’t seem to fit the energy of the event itself, considering how serious it is. I’m surprised that Melania isn’t wearing any jewellery but the belt speaks for itself. It feels very 2000s. It doesn’t really go with her standard wardrobe, it’s as if she’s trying to hit a younger audience. I don’t think it really hit the mark.”
Meanwhile, the fashion editor believes that the royals remain as “traditional” as ever when it comes to their attire for significant events.
Analysing Queen Camilla’s selections, she believed that jewellery served a vital function in her outfit, explaining: “She’s wearing a statement necklace that nicely contrasts the almost matte feel of the dress itself – colour wise it’s vibrant but due to the shape and tailoring, it reads as a bit more subdued and neutral – jewellery does a nice job of playing it up a little bit.”
Nevertheless, it was Kate’s clothing decision that Lauren believed commanded the most attention, as she declared her ensemble even provided a touch of “flirtiness”.
She continued: “It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s traditional, but with a modern take on a conservative hemline which is really nice. It’s long sleeved and high neck, but the lace gives a flirtiness because it’s sheer from wrist to neck.
“The silhouette is stunning, the way it billows out at the bottom and comes in at the waist. It’s very polished but not stuffy. It’s a standard look for her, but it’s a beautiful dress. It suits the occasion.”
Donald and Melania touched down in the UK on Tuesday evening, spending the night at Winfield House, the official London residence of the U.S. ambassador, in Regent’s Park.
The subsequent day they encountered the Prince and Princess of Wales at Windsor Castle before shortly being greeted by King Charles and Queen Camilla.
As the day progressed, the President savoured a lunch alongside royals at the Castle. On the concluding day of their visit today (Thursday, 18 September), the President had a meeting with Sir Keir Starmer at Chequers in Buckinghamshire, while Melania was entertained by Camilla and Kate in Windsor.
