Rory McIlroy’s love life has rarely followed a steady path down the fairway. From childhood sweethearts and broken engagements to a New York party with a future duchess, his romantic past has never been short of drama.

His first major relationship played out like a coming-of-age romance. At just 16, McIlroy began dating Holly Sweeney, his high school sweetheart from County Down, Northern Ireland.

The pair were together for almost a decade, with Sweeney by his side during the early stages of his golf career. But by 2011, shortly after McIlroy claimed his maiden major title at the US Open, the pressures of his growing fame led to their split.

McIlroy later referred to Sweeney as his first love and a stabilising influence. The golfer went on to meet tennis ace Caroline Wozniacki at a charity event in 2011, and they started dating shortly afterwards.

The pair got engaged in 2013 during a holiday in Dubai. However, in May 2014, McIlroy ended their engagement, reportedly via a harsh three-minute phone call, stating he wasn’t ready for marriage.

The breakup made headlines, with Wozniacki expressing her shock. She later tied the knot with NBA player David Lee, while McIlroy concentrated on his golf career.

Later in 2014, the young star was briefly connected to Meghan Markle, who was starring in the TV series Suits on the USA Network at the time. The pair crossed paths in New York City during the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.

McIlroy doused the future Royal with ice water, and they subsequently spent the evening together at a hotel bar. In his book Revenge: The Meghan and Harry Story, author Tom Bowman describes his night out with the now-Duchess of Sussex as “hectic.”

These drinks shared with Markle seemingly impacted McIlroy’s golf performance, as he competed in a tournament the following day.

“The following morning, McIlroy arrived at the Ringwood golf course to play in a new competition,” Bowman wrote. “Worse for wear after a hectic night, he fell back to 101st place. His performance suffered. ‘I wasn’t quite on my game,’ he confessed. ‘I was enjoying myself. ‘”

Their romance proved fleeting, as Meghan went on to date Prince Harry, and ended up marrying the British Royal in 2018. Following Meghan, McIlroy shunned the limelight, pledging to maintain future relationships away from public scrutiny.

Yet Erica Stoll had different plans. The PGA of America event operations professional initially captured McIlroy’s attention at the 2012 Ryder Cup.

They reconnected in 2014 at the same tournament in Scotland, igniting a gradual romance that began as friendship. By 2015, they were official, and Rory proposed in 2016 at a French chateau.

They wed in a lavish ceremony at an Irish castle in 2017, with 200 guests, including former One Direction star Niall Horan and several other golfing pals. Their fairytale romance hit rough waters in May 2024 when McIlroy filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences after a seven-year marriage and the arrival of their daughter, Poppy.

Rumours of tension from his demanding schedule and baseless speculation linking him with CBS reporter Amanda Balionis added fuel to the flames. But staying true to character, Rory prioritised his family.

Just days before their eighth wedding anniversary in 2025, he withdrew the divorce proceedings, issuing a joint statement: “We’ve realized that our best is still ahead.”

The pair welcomed daughter Poppy in 2020, and with McIlroy finally securing that elusive Masters green jacket this spring – completing his career Grand Slam – they seem more solid than ever.
