Nothing says “couldn’t hear clearly” like repeating back what the person said out loud then saying “it’s weird”

  2. I’m glad she apologized. I don’t think that anyone would expect her to know what a zaghrouta is, but it’s important to have an open mind

  3. TelevisionOk6525 on

Yeah, I don’t buy it. She heard that fan say it was their culture and repeat that back to them (“that’s your culture?”) and then she made a stank face. And why is she still referring to it as a yodel?

Edit: Keep downvoting, Sabrina fans. It doesn’t change the fact that her team got Coachella to remove that particular segment from the recorded stream and are copyright striking all the videos on twitter because it’s clearly offensive and ignorant.

The pop culture sub defending this is so crazy. I’m so happy that people over here are sane

This is so lazy and seems so insincere when she seems so genuinely annoyed

Obviously, it was whack as fuck, or Coachella would not have cut it from the live stream

  5. Her reaction and response was weird. In the grand scheme I wouldn’t really demonize someone over it but it’s def just weird. I wouldn’t act like that with a regular person or a famous one.

You know when you just kinda don’t fuck with someone low key cuz they do weird shit? This is kinda like that. I don’t hate you but like I don’t fuck with you either.

I gotta wonder who makes up the Popculture sub, because they consistently have bad takes and lack introspection.

I’m glad we can agree (in this sub) that this is a nothing response.

Glad she issued an apology. Not sure I agree she didn’t hear since she repeated the person saying it was their culture. The bigotry by Stans to defend Sabrina has been especially disappointing.

I feel like Sabrina is that person who tries to humor herself out of difficult situations. Just something I’ve noticed

She could’ve just made an earnest apology and this would’ve been the end of it. Instead she had to make a semi apology with an excuse — one that doesn’t even work because she very clearly repeated everything back… 💀

Lmao. The thing that got me wasn’t even the initial confusion, like fine, you never heard it before and it’s curious to you. It was the PURE disgust on her face even as the fan told her it was from her culture. Like girl. I’m arab and it’s just that much more odd considering how positive of a cheer that is for us, i feel terrible for the fan being shamed for no reason. Such a weird microagressive reaction

I wish people could understand you can be a fan of Sabrina and still think what happened was a little tone deaf

The comments on pop culture chat support her and I am like

She heard, repete and said it was “weird” but now it’s wasn’t clear ?? Be for real Sabrina

  14. Babe, Sabrina, I really wish i could defend you. You heard her so clearly and repeated it back. You should have just apologised for the ignorance and we all would move on.

  15. hatefromandie on

If you are going to apologize, then just apologize. Do not make an excuse that you couldn’t hear or see the person (???) after you fucking say to them oh this is your culture??? yodeling?? so weird. She heard it very clearly and didn’t expect any backlash.

“I welcome all cheers and yodels” knock it off. Deflecting on your actions with a poor attempt humor is not it. Especially if your humor is referencing the offensive comment.

  16. Impossible_Net4275 on

As a fan I wish she would’ve just been like “hey sorry I was trying to be funny like I always am trying to be but clearly I missed the mark here. Apologies to the woman and I’ll learn from this going forward”

  17. AmbitiousBuilding1 on

“My apologies, [especially to the individual fan]. Could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all [people of all cultures at my shows & promise to educate myself on different cultural expressions of excitement].”

^ now THAT would be an appropriate apology.

  18. besteen_mangodazzle on

I get the tongue in cheek, lighthearted nature that she likes to do. But this apology was not the time for it. And while I believe that she truly thought they were a heckler, the amount of microagressions that she’s responded with is ridiculous. Needing to see the person also rubs me the wrong way. Very much doubling down on being a tone deaf white woman :/

  19. Vermicelli-Fabulous on

How about: as a white woman from the United States, where anti-Arab sentiments are prevalent, my implicit bias dictated my reaction. Though it doesn’t excuse the insensitivity or pain I caused, I am truly sorry and working to dismantle unconscious messaging and challenge myself to do better.

But you didn’t hear it? Nah.

  20. teacupghostie on

Whenever Sabrina Carpenter experiences a “controversy”, her responses are always so “teehee I didn’t know better”. I enjoy her music and artistry but that type of media training is *wearing thin*.

TBH, this has really put me off her music for the foreseeable future. That was a very telling response in the moment, and the PR response is just cringe.

  21. Life-Spinach2854 on

this is such a half assed apology 😆 why do these celebs not use their PR people

  22. i’m actually so curious about the difference in demographics between this sub and Popculture! the polar opposite reaction to this whole thing is so interesting given how similar the content shared is.

  23. NegativeMusician2211 on

I wish I could post here a photo of my white 67-year-old mom’s ecstatic face when my friend Hanaa did zaghrouta at my engagement to my Egyptian husband. Mom told me later, “It was like we were in a movie!!” THAT’S how you respond when something cool and cultural happens to you.

  24. crimsonn_umbra on

This is such a disingenuous apology based on a shitty excuse; as if we all didn’t hear her repeat what the person in the video was saying 😭

  25. could have handled it better by not calling someone else’s culture weird, doesn’t mention that in this half ass apology

  26. goldstandardalmonds on

This whole ordeal (the original post and this update) has night and day comments on this sub versus popculturechat. They are hardcore stans over there.

  27. PsychologicalCow9107 on

cherry on top being the apology is on a quote tweet from a video her team had removed due to copyright

  28. Snake_fairyofReddit on

Im so chronically online that as soon as she made that comment i knew an apology note would be coming

  29. GraceUndaPresha on

She’s a popular rich white pop star who doesn’t hang around people who aren’t similar. It’s not surprising she would have a fake smile on her face while she says “that’s your culture? Weird”
