While women get a disproportionate amount of hate, let’s be real here. Did everyone just forget she framed a story about molesting her sister as a “cute” anecdote?
Oh I don’t know, maybe besides being a rape defender, a racist, and the patron saint of 2010s white feminism? Gosh, beats me.
I mean openly admitting to SAing your younger sister when you were a minor is a valid reason for justified anger by the public
I think that Lena Dunham was absolutely the target of anti feminist and fatphobic vitriol, to the extent that now if a show like that were made, she would have even more hate. I also think she shouldn’t rewrite history, which is that she stood up for a rapist who she knew against the word of a woman of color, she said projected shit about Odell Beckham, and she wrote about assaulting her sibling…that is where she lost me.
Girls is still one of the defining TV shows of our time.
Didn’t she openly admit to molesting her sister?
There’s nothing intersectional about Lenas feminism. It’s also just tired. Girls droned on and didn’t have anything new to say after like the first season.
Look to Broad City for a much better take on this style of show, or Insecure
I thought it was interesting that she framed the part about being an annoying loud try hard as a “cop out” despite being reasonable self-critism and then went on to list a bunch of reasons that many would consider to be cop outs. She never addressees the real reasons people dislike her, like the creepy stuff about her sister in her book.
I do think it was good of her to at least acknowledge part of the problem is her own behavior, though.
This will probably get downvoted.. but I think most people don’t really get Girls. I think we’re used to shows where the main characters are less flawed, and people think well if she’s written the show that’s how she thinks girls should behave. Or that she thinks there’s nothing wrong with her character. But the point is that they’re annoying people going through life’s challenges. I am not sure if I’ve articulated that well but yeah
I know nobody here will agree with me but honestly I think the fact that she was not conventionally attractive, and that she came from wealthy, connected parents has had more to do with people’s antipathy towards her then the story about her sister or the lack of POC representation on her show. I think there’s an element of audacity in her that is born from her context and people are made so angry about it.
didn’t she write in her book that she sexually assaulted her younger sister??
Wait what? This woman is a piece of shit. There is literally no reason to try and rehabilitate her image or career. Gross
I think Girls is an excellent vastly underrated piece of work.
I also think Lena Dunham is a terrible person.
I don’t want to hear from her anymore.
“I want a stupid mic stand carved from a wooden staff
I’m tryna relive days that I couldn’t grab
[I looked up what Lena Dunham said and I shouldn’t have](https://genius.com/8933885/Open-mike-eagle-and-paul-white-i-went-outside-today/I-looked-up-what-lena-dunham-said-and-i-shouldnt-have)”
I went outside today, Open Mike Eagle
I can never stop associating her with the story about how she has returned MULTIPLE pets after she adopts them if she doesn’t feel like having them anymore. I was/am a GIRLS fan but does not negate her lack of accountability for a lot of heinous actions she’s taken.
In 2011 she wrote an essay about Japan that was deeply racist. The essay seems to have been scrubbed from the Internet but you can read excerpts here:

I would like a take on lena and lindy’s current memoirs and reception and what it says about us millennial ladies pls.
She’s a fraud who gets constant praise for hilighting and exploiting other woman and the legitimate trauma they face daily. I have always had no love for her and her cohorts and hope that her and her co-conspirators have a long and vapid demise.
It’s the fact that she admitted she touched her sister and belittled POC and apologized for problematic ppl and think she isn’t the cause of all the side eyes she gets…we are watching a delusional person in real time. She gotta be MAGA things line up too well
i do think what she chose to put in her book regarding her sister was the nail in the coffin but she does raise very valid points
The only thing I know her for is her memoir about her molesting her sister.
Ricky lake is that you?
It was her baseless public accusation that Aurora Perrineau lied about her friend sexually assaulting her that sealed the deal on me understanding that Lena Dunham is not worth listening to.
Girls was good, and I genuinely appreciate that show for depicting a woman with an “undesireable” body as actually being desirable (the episode with Patrick Wilson particularly comes to mind). But the the amount of wildly offensive shit that she has said and done outshines her work on Girls and any other art that she’s created. Lena Dunham actively earned much (but not all) of the criticism she received.
