ok so I am not saying this as a defense, but to really point out how chilling this statement is.
He’s not bragging, His own framing makes it clear he’s the bad guy. He’s not proud of this. He’s factual. His summary recognizes he was the aggressor, part of a larger aggressive movement. He knew it was wrong at the time. It wasn’t instigated by him but he was a part of it, so he did it.
This is how evil happens. This is not a story of him bragging and wanting to do this. This is the story about him maybe even being reluctant – but doing it anyway. I hope people realize my point and don’t just assume I’m posting this as a defense. I don’t know who this guy is. But he just essentially wrote an account of exactly how people follow orders into atrocities. Not because they want to and they love it. Because they… just follow along, even while seeing that the other people are just protecting their daughters from being delivered into what is possible a rape room.
Maybe there’s more context that shows this as a brag but this is so matter-of-fact and recognizing of them as the bad guys that it’s even more chilling.
I think the title is misleading. He’s admitting it, but he’s also talking about how fucked up he realized it all was and how much his experience affected his wellbeing. What I hope is this is a case of someone realizing the dogmatic religious fundamentalism they were fed from the cradle isn’t something admirable:
