After 54 years on the air, ‘The Price Is Right’ is testing out a new format, airing in a live special this holiday season hosted by Drew Carey. The one-hour special marks the first time the series will be going live in over five decades. Drew Carey will continue his hosting duties for the live special, with CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach saying at CBS’ recent fall schedule announcement, per Variety, they “would never not do it without him.” As for what’s in store for the live special? “They’ve got some really fun ideas that they’re going to implement to bring the audience into that live experience,” she continued. “I think the prizes are what brings people in, the joy of seeing people win. And at the holiday season, I can’t imagine anything more fun for everyone to witness people winning prizes live.” Full Story: https://www.eonline.com/news/1431198/the-price-is-right-first-live-show-in-54-year-history

  1. The only thing that changed in the format of CBS version's of TPIR was the show's length. In 1972, the show was 30 minutes with commercials vs. the more familiar 60 minutes with commercials.

It's a disservice to the show's overall history, though, to ignore the original show that ran from 1956-65 – first on NBC (through 1963) and then on ABC. Bill Cullen was the host for all of the original seasons. At least the Canadian TPIR – hosted by Howie Mandell – pays proper tribute to it.

  2. If they really want to change the format then show how many people actually take home the stuff. For example most car winners can't pay the taxes

  3. interesting; now I wonder if Sony Pictures Television would do the same with Wheel of Fortune & Jeopardy; especially with the latest renewed ABC deal that additionally revives Sports Jeopardy as ESPN Jeopardy (latter exclusive on Disney+)…
