Olivia Wilde has responded to the wild backlash she received after she was seen looking noticeable different on the red carpet appearance last week. The Don’t Worry Darling star, 42, was being interviewed for her new film, The Invite, when she sparked a wave of cruel comments online, with some keyboard warriors comparing the mum-of-two to Lord of the Rings character, Gollum.

The actress, who used to date One Direction star, Harry Styles, 32, has now spoken out about her the viral video, claiming she was simply standing too close to the camera. Admitting that even her own brother had mocked her, she took to Instagram wearing a hoodie and baseball cap while tucked up underneath a blanket saying: “Leave it to your little brother to give you the maximum amount of s**t. I don’t know why I was so close to the camera; I didn’t have to be.”

Laughing, she asked younger sibling, Charlie Cockburn, who could also be heard giggling: “Do you have any more questions? ‘I’m not dead.”

Charlie had begun the conversation: “Olivia Wilde, do you care to address recent rumours that you’re a resurrected corpse?”

Olivia was supported by her fans after her now viral interview after some accused her of being ‘too thin’ while others baselessly speculated she had been ‘using Ozempic’.

Jumping to her defence, several blamed the lighting on the red carpet at the San Francisco Film Festival. Meanwhile, others suggested the trolls leave Olivia alone and “look at people on the inside, not the outside.”

“It’s unflattering lighting and a bad camera lens. She otherwise looks beautiful and is aging gracefully,” one wrote on X. “I think it may have been the camera settings, or a filter of whoever took that video. I saw a news clip where she didn’t look as bad,” agreed another.

Meanwhile, a third said: “People need to toss off sometimes and leave people be” while a fourth commented: “Why is this even a post? She’s beautiful. We’re living in such a world where everyone has to be perfect. You can’t be too fat; you can’t be too thin…Like, who cares?”

Olivia, who has made the successful move from acting to directing with her new film The Invite about to hit the cinemas, has spoken about the pressures of Hollywood before.

Speaking to Elle magazine in 2022 when she was dating Harry – who she was directing in Don’t Worry Darling and who is now engaged to Zoe Kravitz – Olivia didn’t hold back.

“It’s as though the general public feels that if you are making something that you’re selling to the public, you somehow have accepted that your life will be torn to shreds by a pack of wolves,” she said.

“No, that’s actually not part of the job description,” she added. “Never was.”
