Whoopi Goldberg had to face the heat of The View’s fans after she defended celebrities who attended the Met Gala amid boycott calls over Jeff Bezos’ involvement. For context, during the May 5, 2026, episode, Goldberg voiced her support for those who chose to attend the fashion industry’s biggest night rather than protest.
Bezos and his wife, Lauren Sánchez, served as honorary co-chairs. Their involvement drew significant backlash, with some actors boycotting the gala and protests emerging from Amazon employees and various organizations, according to reports.
At the show’s Hot Topics segment, Whoopi said, “People protest at the Oscars, people protest at the Grammys, people protest at the Met Gala. People protest because, yes, terrible things are happening in their country. And wonderful things are happening at the same time. Two things can be true at the same time. And it doesn’t mean that you don’t care that people are going hungry. Because a lot of those people do stuff for free. They go, and they give their time, they give their money. You don’t always know it’s them, but they’re doing it.”
‘I Like My Amazon’: Whoopi Came in Defence
Continuing her defence, the former actress stressed, “So, I’m not mad at anybody who gets an opportunity to go and show their behind off and have a good night. In this world of so much B-, go have a good time. Go get your Oscar, go be glamorous, put on too much lipstick, too many eyelashes. Go do it! If that’s what you wanna do, go do it.”
She further added, “And, aside from the controversy, I’m like you, I like my Amazon. I want him to pay his people. I want him to make the company better because they’re slipping…so I want him to pay the company’s taxes. That’s what I want.”
The internet didn’t hold back on Goldberg’s comments, and the fans of The View criticized her ‘disappointing’ take. One user wrote, “I’m so disappointed with her take on this one. She’s defending Bezos under the guise of it being a huge fundraiser for the arts possibly but they could have donated every dollar they spent there directly to the arts if they cared so much about them and still had enough money to dress up the way they would’ve for this night any other time because they have the money to do so.”
One more user accused her of ‘sticking up for her friends’ and wrote, “Nope. She’s wrong. She’s just sticking up for her friends and justifying why she had gone before. Only thing she said that was legit was tax them.”
Whoopi Goldberg Openly Defended Bill Cosby Despite R— Allegations
This is not the first time Goldberg’s comments have invited fury. Her recent comments on Kristi Noem and Bad Bunny, along with criticism over her use of a derogatory term for Romani travelers, have drawn attention. She also faced significant controversy in the past for defending Bill Cosby, who had been accused of sexual assault.
According to the Independent, in July 2015, Goldberg supported Cosby on The View, asserting that he was “innocent until proven guilty” — regardless of the evidence piled up against him. Later that month, the actress completely changed her tone. “It looks bad, Bill,” she said to ABC’s Chief Legal Affairs anchor Dan Abrams. Addressing the actor via the camera, she then said, “Either speak up or shut up, because people know now that there’s a lot more out there than they thought.”
