Olympics 2026: Figure Skater Ilia Malinin Breaks Silence After Finishing 8th | E! News

Team USA figure skater Ilia Malinin was expected to take home the gold but came in eighth place after a difficult skate at the 2026 Olympics, admitting that he “blew it.” The 21-year-old—known as the “Quad God” for being the first and only skater to successfully land a fully rotated quadruple axel in an international competition—added that he was not expecting the outcome. “I felt like going into this competition I was so ready,” he said. “I just felt ready getting on that ice. But I think maybe that might have been the reason—that maybe I was too confident that I was gonna go well.” Kazakhstan’s Mikhail Shaidorov ended up taking home the gold medal while Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama won silver and Japan’s Shun Sato skated away with bronze. 1. Heartbreaking. Afterwards, he refers to Beijing. AS if he felt he still didn't deserve to be there. He didn't need another 4 years to prove himself. He's so talented. He needed Chock/Bates there before the performance to smile at him; support him. Show him seasoned skaters who have done it. Get a sports psychologist. I'm sure the interviewers all week didn't help; how BIG the OYMPICS is. He was BIG enough to handle it. His competitor from Krahzatan; that borders Russia. Milanian is Russian in his roots. Almost, like he was identifying with his Russian competitor more than with his own team at THAT moment. This ones on the coaches. THe skater with enough talent was already there. SUPPORT. Especially on the day OF the event. After the team event, he hugs Chock/Bates facing away from the camera. They helped him find the "belief" strength in the MOMENT. Very important. Chock/Bates were the key for that day.
