And it’s disgusting and hopefully Londoners demand this taken off each time. There’s no excuse.
We have min wage laws in the UK for this reason. Tipping comes if you have delivered good service.
If Gordon believes the staff should be paid more then he should do so.
I will never eat at a restaurant like Ramsay’s but I find that waitstaff in Europe DO NOT want the US style tipping system. They want a consistent good wage that makes tips irrelevant, not a crappy wage that requires decent tips.
Wow, I didn’t know he was such a jerk who is probably trying to pass on part of his payroll costs to his already paying customers.
Likely using the 20% service fee to pay waiting staff who no doubt will be on minimum wage and subsidising their wages with Universal Credit.
Either he is paying his staff less than the average for his type of establishments, or, he is trying to give the impression that his establishment is somehow superior to comparable places and it’s justified. Either way he is a tool.

Haven’t loads of restaurants been doing this for ages? I’ve definitely had bills with a 12.5% service charge.. the waiter even pointed it out when i tried to tip them, which was good of them.
It’s not going to go well. Lol. On my honeymoon in Croatia I overheard a Brit explaining to her friends how American tipping works. She was telling them it’s for when you want to show them that you really appreciate their outstanding effort. I didn’t want to burst her bubble to explain it’s just labor cost sharing for American Capitalism.

Very misleading title. While tipping is surely a US thing, service charges are not. It is rare you see service charges added to a restaurant bill unless the size of your party is very large.
One of the better parts of Europe is paying the amount on the bill and walking away. No tip discussion.

Service charges (automatic gratuity) are typically for parties over 6-8 people depending on the restaurant in the US. Otherwise it’s just regular tipping. Stand down Reddit.
