Are “Doom-Roms” the New “Chick Flicks”? Instead of showing the highs of love, they’re focusing on the lows.

Last time I checked we just call these films “romantic dramas.” Not everything needs a neologism.

the drama’s director is a pedophile that bragged about grooming a 16 year old girl when he was 27

and even compared himself to woody allen and saying if woody allen can do it, so can he

Just finished something very bad is going to happen , loved it , not sure if I liked the ending though. If anyone has any similar suggestions let me know 😬

no āŒ we need more love and romance and connection 😭

but yes they can be fun

Actually hate this genre, personally! Real life is depressing enough, I prefer a romance with a happy ending for a little escapism. ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

I recently took a long haul flight and 10 Things I Hate About You was one of the movies available. Why don’t we make movies like that anymore 🄲

I’m just glad to see a little balance. The romcoms of the 80s and 90s normalized some pretty terrible behaviors and taught us all to have unrealistic expectations. I’m here for the real stuff.

Bridgerton is like, single-handedly and steadfastly proving that this isn’t fully the case though.

Brittany Murphy started this trend in the early 00s with a movie that is very underrated. Little Black Book.

In a time when Rom Coms dominanted this movie subverted my expectations.

I feel like that’s only if you’re choosing to focus on specific movies. Idk I think rom-coms are still being released, just no one takes them seriously. But for sure, people are watching both if not multiple genres. Most popular rom-coms are still the older ones, though, because some people feel they were more authentic. But fear not, more than one genre of movie can exist in the zeitgeist at a time.

Also, I feel people like romantic shows more now because it allows for a longer slow burn feel. Even then, ‘People You Meet On Vacation’ is very popular and it was recently released.

I’ve always loved the ā€œromanceā€ stories where it doesn’t work out. My fav romance books have always been Great Expectations and Wuthering Heights. Neither of them are romances. Idk why they just scratch an itch.

  12. No. I want actual “chick flicks” back. Make more stuff like Legally Blonde again 😭

  13. Okay, I’m definitely not watching any of those

I loved the end of the fucking world because it was fun and funny and external threats to their relationship and yeah it was toxic stupidity (not toxic love) but at the end of the day she had his back and he had hersĀ

  15. Marvel can make movie after movie about super heroes, but romcoms are just too unrealistic

For the same reason that Fast and Furious is my favorite franchise- I need a break from reality because it’s too depressing and my antidepressants are already working overtime as it is.

Not for me. Love a good rom-com, life’s already so hard I need some escapism. I’m really excited to see You, Me, and Tuscany this weekend!

I love both actually – sometimes there’s a time and place for each one. I know the world suck so I understand people who don’t want a romantic drama, but sometimes I want something that will make me smile, cringe and feel sad at the same time. Other times I want sweetness and pure love. And honestly, I think it both be cathartic. Some times you need to to know that it’s OK to let go, or weather through really tough times.

Though I am a big fan of horror so that may overlap here now that I think about it.

Agreed with everyone saying these have existed forever though.

I think hard times are just reflected in our media. It’s a difficult time to be young and single.

I’m the 100% opposite. When I go to the movies, I wanna have fun.. I know real life is hard and terrible, and love isn’t enough, I wanna see my fictional couples have a happily ever after.

Anora is another doom-rom that also becomes a romance.

there’s something so irritating about somebody who’s ā€œhappily engaged and with my personā€ talking about how boring and unrealistic movies about people falling in love are. it has big ā€œlet me just swipe for you on bumble for fun!ā€ energy.

  23. SnarftheRooster91 on

Some of you have never seen a little piece of shit starring Vince Vaugh and Jennifer Aniston. This ain’t new.

I saw Doom Rom and got excited that like old school doom was being edited and shared in the public

Dark comedies filled this nich before. I think those are ripe for a comeback. “War of the Roses” “I love You To Death” “Death Becomes Her” “So, I Married an Axe Murder.” All still fun watches.

  26. I fucking hate Past Lives because I want my happy endings.

It’s a good movie but goddamn it leaves me salty. Same with La La Land even though I understand the endings of both.

  27. These types of films have always been the more interesting and fun to watch for me. If this is a new trend I’m gonna need a part time job to pay for how seated I will be.
